Buzz about Gaetano's

In my search for the most unique to celebrate my birthday I came across this best kept secret. How I'm an Italian Colorado native and had no idea this restaurant was around, I have not a clue, but I'm spreading the word. The history of Gaetano's was enough to get me in the original bulletproof door, but the food and the service will keep me coming back.
posted on January 5, 2012There aren't many negative things to say about this place. It has everything including a shrine to Sinatra (how could any self respecting Italian restaurant not have one) the restaurant is like stepping back in time. You almost expect to see a few "wise guys" sitting in the back of the bar area. There's the dark wood and the red leather booths.
The whole staff is very friendly and after going a few times they remember you, and the bartenders know what you like to drink. Unlike some places you are allowed to stay at the bar, and then be seated for dinner, no rush, what a pleasant experience. They will also transfer your bar tab to your table!
Now for the negative:
The bartenders aren't allowed to free pour the drinks. In fact, there are wine glassed set up with a line around them that they have to measure by (come on -- talk about cheap).
The singer they have on Fridays can be a little annoying. He's trying to enhance the atmosphere which is great, he has the whole rat-pack style complete with the drink in his hand. He sings very well, all of the goomba standards, the only problem is it's a little on the loud side.
The last thing is they took braciloe off the menu. I would love to see that back, it’s the only place in town I could find it.
Like I said the food's the best in town.

Eating in history! Opened in 1947 by the three Smaldone brothers, sons of, and alleged bosses within, Denver’s most legendary Mob family, Gaetano’s is today a high-end Italian restaurant. They refuse to dodge the finest ingredients of its Mafia past. House specialties include a triumvirate of veal dishes—Scalloppine, Picatta & Marsala—as well as a Shrimp Fra Diavolo that’ll make you want to wear pinstripes and spats, and chomp a fat cigar over a short glass of anisette. Ciao!
