Buzz about Simms Steakhouse

As much as I loved the old Simms Landing, it had taken a slide over the years. This new Landry's version is enough the same to fit the bill, but upgraded to another level, The interior is nicely updated, and takes even better advantage of the fabulous views, with a more intimate setting. The service is a whole different animal- real pros, and several servers bring each course by hand- no rickety serving tables or who gets what. Get your wallet out- it's pricey, but it's very good. The appetizers are top-notch, get the tuna tartar, OMG! The steaks and lobster were perfectly cooked, and the baked potatoes are HUGE. The Au gratin potatoes come in their own tureen, and are rich and enough for two. The veggies were nice, if a tad tough, and the house chopped salad, which is alacarte, is great. The lobster bisque, also alacarte, was excellent. The bread is in separate baking cups like a souffle', and very good, but the one thing I would say, and I heard several diners say, is that bread should not be extra- people just expect bread right off the bat with their drinks, even though they bring the appetizers asap. For the prices, it should be included, not a course after appetizer. That being said, the drinks are generous, the service and food and ambiance are upscale in a way West Metro has been lacking, and the $300+ for the four of us was well spent for a surprisingly enjoyable evening. (If you go after 6:30 or so, have a reservation- we got a great table at about 6:00, but it filled up by 7:00!)

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I decided to go out to dinner on Saturday night and thought, "we haven't been to Simms since it changed from Simms Landing so let's give it a try". So we went with the plan to have a coctail and enjoy the view, then have a nice dinner. Surprisingly, we got right in (that should have been our clue) and had a cocktail and also the Calamari appetizer. It was pretty tasteless and the sauce was the same. Then we moved on to a Great Window seat where we ordered the Scallops for me and a forgettable fish plate for her. We would have ordered a Steak, but the prices were outrageous so we "settled". Her fish was so salty she couldn't eat it so she ate mine, which was fair at best, and I ate her salty fish. Both meals were served with a form of pasta that was simalr to rice, but mushy, with very little flavor, and assparagus the size of my thumb and very tough.
Service was fair, food was poor and very overpriced. We used to look forward to a very special evening there and often took out of town guests and clients there as a special evening. Now we will have to find someplace else.

If you’ve ever needed a second to take in the forest without completely disconnecting from the urban Denver trees, Simms Landing is just stones throw away yet offers a shift in perspective usually earned only after an hour drive up Interstate 70. The view will always be the toasting point to this halfway posh Lakewood staple, with its sightlines of the downtown Denver skyline unparalleled. However, the perch isn’t just a gimmick, the food speaks for itself. Tuesday finally gets a little credibility in the weekly grind with the King Crab and Prime Rib Special, both the surf and turf very generous portions. Where Simm landed was likley close to the bar as well, as thier weekly drink specials can cause a case of vertigo if you don't practice moderation.
