I recently visited a local dive-bar called the Bulldog Bar, located on east Colfax. My recent fascination with dive-bars brought this little hole-in-the-wall to my attention. And when I say hole, I mean it!

Let me start with on a high note, and the only one for this place. I met a nice older man there who had apparently been going there for years. He told me that the place had seen many owners over the years and that the current ones have driven the place into the ground. He seemed to know a few people who had walked in earlier that afternoon, so I'm guessing he knows what he's talking about. He knew a lot of history about not only the bar, but the neighborhood and Denver as well. Thanks old man...you made my visit as good as it could have been!

There seemed to be some sort of shift change when I arrived...a woman served me my first cocktail, then a big crowd of people arrived for some poker tourney, and a man was my next bartender. Getting a drink after this seemed impossible! When I did finally get his attention, he seemed irritated that I spoke up. And the drink he poured was weak at best. This guy seemed more interested in juggling bottles and flirting (or trying to flirt) than pouring me a decent drink!

I called a friend a couple of hours after being there and decided to try to head over to another bar closer to Capitol Hill. My friend said he'd come meet me there because he wanted to check the place out too. After he arrived, it took our bartender at least ten minutes to acknowledge his presence. I waited for my friends reaction to his first sip of Crown and Coke...same reaction I had, weak! We sucked down our drinks and we left, with haste!

The whole point of going to a dive-bar is to get a strong drink, to meet some locals and make friends with the bartender. None of these things seemed possible at this place. If one of the locals is saying bad things about the owners and the business in general, well, that's never a good sign.

And last but not least, the bartender is supposed to to be the ringleader of sorts, and if he ignores you and takes no interest in anyone but himself, what's the point of going back to the bar? (And by the way, give up the showboating..It's a dive-bar not a cruise ship!)

There are other much cooler bars with better reputations right down the street. My suggestion? Skip out on this one!

I remember when this place used to be "Mr. Von's Alamo" in the 80's and early 90's. Brings back a lot of good times. It's nice to see they have kept the place the same, but also have appeared to do a few updates, like adding lights. I wonder if the same crowd still gathers, Jesus, Tiny, Terry, Terri, Jimbo, Frances, etc.... This place is definately one should visit once in their life.

Your search returned no results.
Try one of these tips to improve your results:
  • Ensure your search term was spelled correctly.
  • Use a filter, search by neighborhood or drag and zoom the map to check a different part of town.
  • Make your search less specific (e.g. Chinese instead of Kung Pao chicken).
  • Are we missing a venue or event? Add it and let us know what you think.
  • You gotta dig a neighborhood bar like this one.  It’s a step or two above a dive, but completely avoids even a whiff of LoDo pretentiousness.  The bar itself is a throwback to lounges of the 50s—horseshoe-shaped, mirrors behind the bottles, delicate lighting.  Rat Pack all the way.  No food, but you can order it in from nearby places.  Good shot specials.  Pool tables in the second room and a tidy little stage for live music.  And they open at 0700, which is useful information on those special 'Hangover Mondays'.

    What exactly is 'eh?'

Eh. I don’t feel strongly about it either way. I don’t hate it or love it, I wouldn’t recommend it or dismiss it, it just is.
