Picture this - It's Saturday night, I am STARVING and have money to spend! It's a weekend staying at my boyfriend's house so we are deep in the wilds of Littleton. My boyfriend suggests we try the Rox Bar and Grill. Neither of us had been there before and we both liked the idea of a locally owned spot.

To be honest I was underwhelmed when we walked in, very corporate looking - think Applebee's without the personal touches. We glance over the menu, basic bar food. Billed as "Upscale Casual" I wasn't really sure what they were going for - no locally sourced ingredients, no fresh fish, nothing really stand out. The "specials" were tilapia; Your choice of fish and chips or tacos. The boyfriend went with the fish and chips. I wanted fish SO BAD - but Tilapia is kinda yucky. I decided on a Caesar Salad with shrimp.

When our food came I admit to being a little disappointed by the quantity of shrimp on my salad (4) however, I was pleasantly surprised by how succulent they looked. I eagerly bit into the first one. WOW - it was one of the saltiest food items I have ever tasted - I mean seriously blow your taste buds salty. Thinking I had perhaps chosen a "bad" shrimp I took a bite of a second shrimp. Same thing - way too salty to eat. I took at stab at my salad - a half bunch of romaine split and flayed on the plate with all of the tough end leaves in tact and was totally disheartened. The flavor was just salt, the lettuce leaves were limp and there was absolutely nothing to recommend it aside from the rather pleasant pink color of the dressing.

When the waiter showed up I explained that the salad was far too salty for me. He responded with "Well what do you expect with Caesar dressing and parmesan cheese?"

"REALLY?!!!!!!" I thought to myself, but all I said, very calmly was "I know what Caesar salad should taste like but this is inedible, would you care to try one of the schrimp?" The waiter asked if he could bring me something else to eat . I said no the Jalapeo Poppers we had just ordered would be enough. To keep everything pleasant and to demonstrate I was a good sport, I also asked for another martini. And asked him to please just remove the salad.

He didn't - he left it sitting on the table throughout the rest of the meal - staring and mocking. Later he explained he couldn’t remove the salad from my bill but felt he gave a very nice discount that would satisfy me.

When the bill came he had credited a little less than 20% or $2.45 from the salad I couldn’t eat. We had spent over $30 on drinks, plus my boyfriend’s meal and they couldn’t just remove the horrible salad. The salad I ate literally four bites of. I asked to speak to his manager. I explained to her about the saladShe explained that the restaurant couldn’t be expected to have to refund money every time they made food someone didn’t like. No, really, that is what she said. She said she would give me a coupon f... more »
