I've read other reviews that say the main dishes are delish, but I'm sorry that we won't be back to try them after the appetizers we ordered. The four we tried were embarrassingly bad: 1) The Alligator. Difficult to say whether there was meat in there or not... Just rubbery fried breading. 2) The Rattlesnake. A soupy dish of cream cheese and Chipotle seasoning. Some rubbery meat in there too. 3) Rocky Mtn Oysters. Again, fried breading and something with not-really good texture. 4) Soup. I hate to sound like I'm piling one, but the Cheddar Potato soup was watery, and little taste. We came armed with cameras, exciting about this wonderful Denver landmark, but left very dissappointed and felt somewhat taken advantage of. Ok, maybe I'll go back for the free drinks they gave us, but foodies need not apply.

If you claim to be a Denver native and have yet to eat at Denver's oldest you have to go there quickly!! At first glance the menu may seem a little pricey but all the prices include amazing soup or salad and a huge side! trust me the whole thing is more than one meal. This place is the definition of a steak house-- there will never be any doubt in your mind you went to the right place-- the dutch apple pie is their house specialty, my personal favorite dessert is the rocky road brownie.

Don't forget to ask to have some of the classic things pointed out such as JFK's fishing liscense, Teddy Roosevelt's Flag, the number one liquor lisence and the Whale's "horn" from ripley's believe it or not

  • If you'd like the experience of being stared down by whatever type of animal you're having for dinner then by all means head on over to Buckhorn Exchange. Eating rare Rocky Mountain treats such as buffalo, rattlesnake and Rocky Mountain oysters in a room filled with stuffed versions of such animals can be a little creepy, but the experience is worth it. This is Denver's oldest restaurant - they have liquor license #1 - and the staff is extremely knowledgeable about the different meats. They are also very friendly. Don't forget to kick back with an after dinner drink in the old-timey saloon. Afterall, you may need it after what you just ate.
