After seeing steady growth in viewers over the course of its first season, and staging a serious pop culture infiltration during the break, “True Blood” is poised to take seat at HBO’s table of iconic hits like “Sex and the City,” “Six Feet Under” and “The Sopranos” at the start of its new season—you know, as long as it doesn’t suck.

It doesn’t. The new “True Blood” has all the sex, gore, and supremely spooky plot twists to save your sticky summer Sundays from the even more frightening alternative of watching network TV’s dismal offerings. The premiere picks up at the exact moment we left off in November, with Sookie, Tara and Detective Bellefleur stumbling on a yet-to-be identified dead body in the Merlotte’s parking lot. Resolution to the cliffhanger comes quickly, but the killer still has plenty of other Bon Temps denizens to target.

That’s just one of the problems facing our favorite southern vamps and humans. In the first handful of episodes, Bill, Sookie and new vamp Jessica head to Dallas to solve a vampire abduction, Jason goes off to a church camp for vampire-haters and Tara falls even more under the influence of the mysterious Maryann. There are also a few orgies thrown in for good measure.

The buzz: Are those Lafayette’s dead, painted toes dangling out of the back door of Bellefleur’s car? The fan favorite went missing in the season finale and has been notably absent in the series’ flood of promotional ads and TV spots.

The verdict: “True Blood” is the closest thing to must see television you’re likely to get this summer. This season’s spot-on combo of beautifully shot southern gothic storytelling and fantasy camp will only solidify its position as HBO’s new flagship series.

Did you know? The part of Tara Thorton was originally played by “Passions” vet Brooke Kerr, but when creator Alan Ball met with Rutina Wesley, he reshot most of the pilot with her assuming Tara’s role.

A new season of "True Blood" premieres Sunday, June 14, at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO.
