Q&A: Christian Siriano

After becoming the youngest "Project Runway" contestant (and winner!), Christian Siriano continues to dominate headlines, from Fashion Week shows to designing for Payless and Victoria's Secret. Now, the young Annapolis native can add author to his ever-expanding résumé. "Fierce Style: How to be Your Most Fabulous Self" debuts next week with tips on how to avoid looking like a hot mess and embracing your inner Ferocia Coutura.

When did the idea for a book start?

The book came after the “Project Runway” win. I thought it would be great to do something for that young fashionista who loves style.

What was the hardest part to write?
I think the hardest part is when you are giving tips and ideas on where to shop and what to wear because it is subjective. I don’t want people to be like, "This is the end-all idea."

You list wire-frame glasses as a fashion faux pas. Where did you get your signature plastic frames?
I think it is important to have fabulous eyewear. They are Prada, but I got them in London at this tiny, weird place that had really interesting frames. These ones just happened to be designer.

In the book you confess to once being, ‘as tickity tack as they came.’
I had so many bad, scary phases. I was totally Guido at one point. My hair was really wet, gelled and all combed forward. It was very Cesar. It was horrible. I had a thug moment [too], which is so hilarious because I am a little white fairy.

You also mention a love of T.G.I. Friday's.
I love cheesy, American food, from T.G.I.F. to Applebee's.

Halloween is coming up. What are you going to be?

Well, it's a surprise. Last year, I was Cruella de Vil—Tranny de Vil, basically. It was amazing. You have to Google the images. You will pee your pants. This year, I am also going as a Disney character and she also is quite fabulous.

You are known for using words like "fierce" and "hot tranny mess." Any new favorites?
I say "j’adore" a lot.

Any tips for dressing in a recession?

For me, my whole thing is accessories. They are the easiest way to revamp a wardrobe. Obviously for me, I do a Payless collection, and you can buy an amazing shoe for $40 or bag for $20. You can’t beat that.

What about online shopping?
Oh, online shopping! I think Gilt is the most amazing site. It is really great for everyone. You can get gowns for $400. You can’t go wrong.

Any future plans?
I'll be doing a Payless collection for the next four seasons, so there will be tons of different styles to choose from that will be really fun. I also recently launched my Victoria's Secret make-up collection. But I have a few things in the works...
