A look at the Big Fast before the big day

One of my mom’s very favorite stories to tell is that of her 28-hour, pre-epidural labor giving birth to yours truly. Having heard about the pain and misery of labor for my entire life, I assumed that the delivery was the worst part of pregnancy. My fear was misplaced. I should have been more frightened of the Big Fast than the Big Push.
The Big Fast is the laundry list of simple pleasures denied to pregnant women when they need them most. Everything from nail polish to baths are frowned upon, and the list of can’t-eat foods is especially heartbreaking. Although there is disagreement over what is and is not safe for Preggers to eat, this list sums up the general consensus of the American medical system. Here are the foods and drinks that I’m not quite willing to trade in my firstborn for. But some days I’m tempted.
