Granted, all the pork and beef marinating in these bowls of
goodness don’t leave the soft carbon footprint Al Gore would like, but what
better way to celebrate Mother Earth than with
Going green
Celebrating the best green chile in Colorado
April 22, 2008Lime
1424 Larimer St., DenverThe hippest joint on the list, you usually don’t expect too much from the food from a place that has obviously spent a lot of energy on the atmosphere. Not so at Lime, the green is good and is a bit mild if you want to soften the following day. Not what you would call traditional, but remember, the place is trendy, hence trying to be a trend setter.
La Loma Mexican Restaurant
2527 W. 26th Ave., DenverThe menu selection is traditional Mexican with fajitas, tacos, enchiladas and burritos, but this is all with the award-winning green chile. More of a stew-like consistency, if you don’t like the thick stuff maybe this is not your dish. But if you’re up for a full meal where you never have to stray from the verde heaven, grab a bowl.
Senor Pepe's Mexican Restaurant
1422 Poplar St., DenverSenor Pepe's opened in the '70s and they've been perfecting their Mexican recipes ever since since then. The chile, above anything else on the menu, reflects this time spent in the kitchen.
La Cueva
9742 E. Colfax Ave.,
Aurora
It’s been 25 years since the Nunez family opened La Cueva, and their recipe for green chile have not only kept them in business for a quarter of a century, but also inspired a cookbook. Try one bite and you'll know why.
Rosa Linda's Mexican Cafe
2005 W. 33rd Ave., DenverNow in its third generation of ownership by the Aguirre Family, Rosa Linda’s should be on the shortlist of every fan of Mexican food in town, especially if that list includes the city's best green.
CityGrille
321 E. Colfax Ave., DenverAward-winning burgers, green chili and fries make CityGrille an authority on American fare. As such expect this chile to be more Western than Southern, but there is a reason it continues to win accolade after accolade: it is damn good regardless of its regional style.
Pete's Kitchen
1962 E. Colfax Ave., DenverThe gods of Olympus looked down from the mountain top, zeroed in on Capital Hill, saw that the breakfast outlook was bleaker than the Spartans odds at Thermopylae, and called Pete’s Kitchen into being. There is no myth involved in the legendary green chile though. The common home for it atop the breakfast burritos, but order a side and it will make any dish come alive with a bolt of thunder.
Campus Lounge
701 S. University Blvd., DenverYou wouldn't think a college sports bar would be a staple for the green goodness, but if you pass on the Campus Lounge you will be sorry. While grand by itself, it usually comes slathered on everything from the tortilla chips to the quesadillas.
Brewery Bar II
150 Kalamath St., DenverThe numbering of this string of Tex-Mex eateries can be a tad confusing when trying to figure out which is which, but when you taste the unthickened chile there will be no mistaking where you are at. Brewery Bar’s bowls are some of the spiciest in town.
