And the winner is…
Snarf's
2128 Pearl St.
Boulder, CO 80302Neighborhood: Pearl Street / Downtown
Named after a verb meaning to devour eagerly, that is exactly what you’ll do at Snarf’s. Their mostly student customers are willing to wait for the Snarfilicious good stuff – this isn’t Subway and it takes some time to make a sandwich this tasty. Granted, their CU student clientele probably isn’t the most discriminating (especially when hungry), but in a town full of great restaurants, Snarf’s still stands out for sandwiches. They know their audience and offer multiple vegetarian options, including eggplant, artichoke and Portobello mushroom subs. There’s even a hot dog Snarf for processitarians – those who will only eat a combination of processed meats.
Nominees
Tony's Market
7421 W. Bowles Ave.
Littleton, CO 80123Tony's Market is basically a supermarket and meat market (not the kind of meat market you're thinking about). They also do catering, baking, deli-style sandwiches and a cooking school at their Centennial Promenade location off County Line Road. All Tony's locations are nominated.
Mr. Lucky's Sandwiches
711 E. 6th Ave.
Denver, CO 80203Neighborhood: Capitol Hill
It is a tiny little place, but don’t let that fool ya. The sandwiches at Mr. Lucky's are more than big enough. They stack up the usuals (french dip, etc.), with some clever additions that are sure to please (the Bird-n-Basil) or make you wax nostalgic (Sloppy Joes). It’s small, with fewer than six places to sit, so it’s a good idea to order your stuff to go.
Salvaggio's Italian Deli
2609 Pearl St.
Boulder, CO 80302Neighborhood: Pearl Street / Downtown
Apparently New Yorkers don’t like cute, witty names for their sandwiches or much of anything in the way of décor. But judging by Salvaggio’s, they take great pride in their bread. This is the bread that sandwich legends are made of. Baked fresh daily, it’s soft without being overly doughy. If Salvaggio’s seems a bit anti-Boulder (it’s not vegetarian-friendly and the staff doesn’t pretend to care about your aura), it more than makes up for it with damn fine sandwiches.
Cheba Hut Toasted Subs
1313 College Ave.
Boulder, CO 80302Neighborhood: The Hill
Need something to curb those mid-afternoon munchies? Do as they do at Cheba Hut and "escape the establishment." Chill out with a Humboldt, Silver Haze or Majic Mushrooms in a nug, pinner or blunt. Yes, this is still a sandwich shop. Drop in to this joint on the Hill in Boulder for a “toasted” sub and blaze through the rest of your day.
