And the winner is…

The Cherry Cricket

The Cherry Cricket

2641 E. 2nd Ave.
Denver, CO 80206
A note on the menu says that the Cherry Cricket’s food is “way too good for a bar this fun.” Fun is indeed the operative word here; just take a look at some of the descriptions. Appetizers are “Horzidurvees,” and hot items are designated as “screamin’” or “semi screamin’.” Then you reach the drinks, with vivid names like Mind Eraser, Purple Hooter, Gorilla Tits, Frozen Monk, Surfers on Acid and Transient on Heroin. Although that’s a hard act to follow, the beer menu manages to impress with a large and varied selection, including the hard-to-find Stella Artois and Smithwicks.

Candlelight Tavern

Candlelight Tavern

383 S. Pearl St.
Denver, CO 80209
Neighborhood: Wash Park
The Candlelight Tavern’s menu is bound to bring back memories of John Belushi for some people. If you watched “Saturday Night Live” in the late ‘70s it was hard to miss his Olympia Café sketch, where the selections were limited to cheeseburgers, chips and Pepsi. At the Candlelight there are six menu items: Hamburgers, cheeseburgers, French fries, onion rings, chili and chicken wings. Actually, the chili is seasonal, so it might be safer to say five. In any case, this is a menu for minimalists, and perhaps it’s precisely that limited focus that makes the onion rings so darn addictive.
Hamburger Mary's

Hamburger Mary's

700 E. 17th Ave.
Denver, CO 80203
Neighborhood: 17th Avenue / Up Town
Daily happy hour are only where the good times start at Hamburger Mary’s Bar and Grille. With a full bar and a full menu, the energy of the joint is just what one would need after a long day of work but before a long night on the town. With trivia nights and karaoke nights on their calendar, it is a good bet that there is always something going on at Mary’s. Their full menu specializes in house hamburgers, as the name would imply, which will impress even the haughtiest of hamburger connoisseurs.
CityGrille

CityGrille

321 E. Colfax Ave.
Denver, CO 80203
Neighborhood: 17th Avenue / Up Town
The Burger is an American symbol. It appeals to nearly every demographic, and can be made six ways from Sunday to suit any palette. No wonder it's what CityGrille on Capitol Hill does best. Serving up its award-winning burgers, green chili and fries to Denver natives across the grand spectrum, CityGrille keeps another important burger principal in mind by keeping its prices low (Mondays offer "burger and a beer for $6.95"). With a full bar, nightly specials and a blueberry, habanero BBQ sauce, CityGrille is making an American symbol look good!
Pint's Pub

Pint's Pub

221 W. 13th Ave.
Denver, CO 80204
Neighborhood: Golden Triangle
This is a traditional British Pub specializing in ‘Single Malt Whiskeys’ and “Cask Conditioned” beers and ales. Designed to give you the “We’re in Great Britain feel,” this home-turned- restaurant has two British phone booths (one that holds the ATM machine and the other outside to draw you in), a mural of London with a great ‘Big Ben’ draw-ering, a map of Great Britain where guests can put a pin signaling where they are from and their menu is a great touch of Britain. Their burgers are called, “Whimpy’s” and are so damn good my mouth is watering just thinking about them. Not to mention their fries. We’re not talking about the usual fries that we’ve all had before. They’re homemade and so good you can’t get enough of them. Let’s not tease ourselves anymore and move onto their malts and beer options. All of their beers are a good choice, so that helps your decision, but their “Phonebooth Lager” definitely whets the ol’ whistle well with a ‘Whimpy’ burger. Be careful ordering your whiskeys—The Glen Flagler circa 1972 will set you a back a mere $475. This is a bloody good time, cheers.
