I don't deserve this honor...no, seriously, I don't
After 54 years and countless head-scratching moments, it’s hard to shake the impression that pretty much anyone can win a Grammy. Never mind categories like “Best Spoken Word Album for Children” and “Best Southern, Country or Bluegrass Gospel Album"*—even in the major categories, the Grammys often leave us slack-jawed in disbelief. Herbie Hancock’s “River: The Joni Letters” for Album of the Year? Really?
We decided to dig back through the annals of Grammy history and come up with our picks for the 20 least likely Grammy winners of all time. Believe us, it was tough narrowing the list down to just 20—and even then, unlikely winners like Hancock didn’t make the cut (he at least is a celebrated jazz artist—others on this list, not so much).
So thanks for keeping us guessing, Grammys! We’re sure your 54th annual installment will have plenty more surprises in store.—Andy Hermann, Metromix
