What kind of music do you guys play?
Ryan (center): That’s the question everyone dreads! I’ll start with the lowest common denominator: It’s rock music. To further subgenre, it would be alternative rock. Maybe indie pop influenced by New Wave power-pop, classic rock and punk rock.
And is this your first South by Southwest?
Ryan: Absolutely not. First one was 2001.
Wow! So how many have you played now?
Mark (left): Four or five, something like that.
Tell me about your two shows. How’d they go?
Mark: The first one was in a parking lot. It was a day party. It was really fun.
Ryan: We only had two microphones, so Mark and I got to share one. So that was kind of odd—for such a huge part of the show, having two of us sing into one mic.
The Beatles used to do that, and I always thought, “That looks uncomfortably intimate.”
Ryan: It is. It’s uncomfortably intimate.
Mark: And Ryan spits a lot when he sings.
Is there anyone you’re looking forward to seeing tonight?
Mark: I want to see Band of Horses.
Ryan: I’ve never listened to Stone Temple Pilots or been into them, but I’m kinda curious to see them. I’m just curious what their show would be like.
