Best Coast brings the beach to the Bluebird Theater
Best Coast singer Bethany Cosentino turned 24 in Denver Wednesday night, marking the occasion with her own bottle of champagne, a paper Burger King crown and a joyous, free-form set at the Bluebird Theater.
The low-fi three-piece, which has been steadily picking up buzz with its surf rock-meets-riot grrrl sound, breezed through most of their debut album "Crazy For You," taking plenty of breaks to take shots and joke with the crowd. At least three guys in the audience asked Consentino to marry them, and it was easy to understand why. Guitarist Bobb Bruno seemed content to stand quietly on his side of the stage and lay down licks that were alternately chill and face-melting.
Opening act Sonny and The Sunsets brought even more of a '60s prom vibe to the stage, picking out deceptively simple retro rock that got the crowd in a California state of mind.
