Holiday music in Denver

As we write this, it's snowing like crazy outside of beautiful Metromix Denver headquarters (a.k.a. the 9News broom closet). Watching the bushes thrash and our cars slowly sink into a sea of white, it makes us more than a little misty for the sun-drenched, bikini-clad summer concerts. Our carefree days spent rocking out at the Mile High Music Festival and watching Blink-182 come back from the dead seem so far behind us now.

Fortunately, the end of 2009 promises to be one of Denver's biggest music seasons in recent memory, bringing new meaning to the term "holiday music." With locals such as 3OH!3 and Meese to national names like the Pixies all on the way, hibernation is the last thing you should be thinking about. So strap on your dancing skis and let's hit the slopes.

No matter how much of a music fan you are, no matter how much you eschew sellouts and love watching local bands play to an audience of 11 at a 1 a.m. bar show, you can't help but get excited about the occasional huge, MTV-baiting concert. If you're looking for multi-million-dollar tours from folks you read about in TMZ, you're in the right place: Here are our favorites set for the coming months.

These bands represent older music, in spirit if not in the actual age of the performers. From Dweezil Zappa to Hanson (before you scoff, remember that "MmmBop" came out nearly 13 years ago), these bands are not generally not showing up on collabos with T-Pain and Lady Gaga, nor do they have 20 million Twitter followers. What they do is play music the same way they always have, and get better all the time.

While summer is touring season for big bands and bigger festival shows, winter often heralds the arrival of smaller, stranger acts. Here are some of the top bands aiming to cure your cabin fever with some unexpected thrills before year's end.

Forget Christmas carols. Sometimes, nothing short of a big loud rock show will satisfy. Fortunately there are plenty of hard-charging bands headed right for Denver, ranging from the lively and charming (AFI) to the holy-mother-of-God-get-out-of-the-way (Five Finger Death Punch). Here are some of the top picks.
