Back on the road again with Styx
May 31, 2009
Red Rocks Ampitheatre is a timeless treasure, crafted from the winds and rain over thousands of years, giving an incredible natural theatre for both beast and man, and giving stage to those classics that will rock forever! So there would be no better venue to host bands that have written their names on the tablets of timelessness. Classic rock and ballad machines, REO Speedwagon and Styx with special guests .38 Special, graced the stage of Red Rocks on Saturday night, gathering both young and old, but simply those ready to rock!
Fans arrived early to tailgate, and many adorned their Styx and REO shirts from tours of days past, and many recounted watching these bands as kids in the late 70’s and 80’s. A nearly sold-out crowd made the pilgrimage to pay homage to their all time favorite bands.
.38 Special started off the night, who played as though they could have been a headliner themselves. And then the mighty Styx took the stage. No one could guess these guys are in their “Timeless” years as they still rocked like it was 1986 playing their biggest hits such as “Come Sail Away”. There was still dueling guitars, backed by floating synth, long hair and an explosive stage presence. REO Speedwagon finished off the night, just as big and rocking just as hard as their tour partners. The crowd, who had braved the torrential down pour of rain for the entire duration of the show, sang as loud as they could to some of REO’s greatest ballads, such as “Can’t Fight This Feeling” and “Keep on Loving You”. New Styx and REO Speedwagon shirts to commemorate the tour were purchased and ready to be worn for another 20 years.
