Concert pics: Flight of the Conchords at Red Rocks

It’s no secret Red Rocks Amphitheater is world-renowned. It is both intimate and huge—an anomalistic feat rarely accomplished by concert venues.  Not only does its orange, crimson walls hold decades of historical musicianship, the encapsulating geographic formations have seen millions of years of performances; or at least that’s what the Flight of The Conchords say.

“This is where the dinosaurs played, eh, Bret? They did dinosaur shows here, for dinosaur crowds.”

For those unfamiliar with the Flight of The Conchords, describing them may be a bit tricky.  “Sarcastic” grazes the appropriate characterization, except that their humor is not always satirical. 

The Conchords are made up of a pair of comedic New Zealanders, Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement, who emit both wit and laughs. Originally, they were stars of a half-comedy-half-break-out-into-song HBO TV series, and now the two are on tour.

It’s really one of those "see it to understand it type things." But, based on the fact that Red Rocks sold out their show in just days, our guess is that you have seen it.

Very unconventional, the evening opened up with "Iron and Wine," a soothing and absorbing band. Afterwards, comedian and semi regular on the show, Arj Barker, kicked off a 20-minute stand up comedy set that had patrons almost rolling down the infamous Red Rocks staircases.

However, it was only suiting, because from the moment the Conchords took the stage to the last seconds of their encore, it was all tummy-tickling laughs.
