'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'
The best: Frank Sinatra (from "A Jolly Christmas from Frank Sinatra")
Sinatra’s warm, velvety croon was tailor-made for sentimental holiday music, and he recorded no fewer than four Christmas-themed albums over the course of his four-decade career. It’s hard to pick just one Ol’ Blue Eyes holiday chestnut, but this one makes us misty-eyed every time.
The worst: Christina Aguilera (from "My Kind of Christmas")
Xtina delivers this gentlest of Xmas ballads in exactly the same way she delivers every song—that is to say, she slathers on the screeching high notes and vocal acrobatics like gravy on a deep-fried turkey. It’s impressive, sure, but when is someone going to tell this girl that restraint can be a virtue?
Also performed by: Judy Garland, Amy Grant, Bob Dylan, Barbra Streisand, Bing Crosby, Relient K, Chris Isaak, Clay Aiken, Gloria Estefan, James Taylor, Kermit the Frog, Local H, Melissa Etheridge, Michael Bolton, the Pretenders, Rosie O’Donnell and Billy Joel, Sarah McLachlan, Julianne Hough, Twisted Sister, Toni Braxton.
