One of Robert Downey's earliest roles was as Billy Covington in "Air America" in 1990, starring alongside Mel Gibson as a recruited gun-runner for the CIA in Laos during the Vietnam War. Whether it was back then or now, he has always been able to throw himself completely into a role and make himself believable.

Did he play a classical composer in a late 80s/early 90s bio pic? This has been driving me nuts, I thought he did, but can’t find it anywhere.

Looking at this has made me realize that Robert Downey Jr. hasn't been in that many movies that were very commercially successful. That has changed somewhat recently, but it's kind of interesting that he's been a pretty much household name for so long. One upcoming role of his that is bound to be quite quirky is Sherlock Holmes. The movie will be directed by Guy Ritchie of 'Snatch' and 'Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels' fame.
