When it was announced that Denver was to be the host city of the 2008 Democratic National Convention, excitement poured through our city. Anger also poured through. In this documentary by director George Hickenlooper (Mayor Hickenlooper's cousin), we get a harsh glimpse of what the mayor of a city has to go through on a daily basis. Not to mention what that mayor has to go through when preparing his city for one of the largest political conventions in history.
Filmed entirely in Denver and surrounding cities, "'Hick' Town" shows us what it's like to be the man of the town in a honestly entertaining way. Sure, there are the expected shots of the mayor writing speeches, picking out his tie and stressing about city- and statewide emergencies. However, there is also the unexpected.
For example, did you know that Mayor Hickenlooper never takes the elevator in City Hall? In fact, he races co-workers up the marble stairs. He also takes advice from his young son and loving wife. After watching this film, you feel like your head just spun a 360. All of his struggles and daily duties are exhausting. Having to try and save a pitbull from execution while getting Denver's streets ready for the DNC is something that not many can say they have done.
There are also moments in the film where emotions run high. When Mayor Hickenlooper must speak to the gay community and give his support, while outside, protestors are screaming hateful and threatening words at Denver's gays and lesbians. it's hard to imagine just one person has to be the one to smooth it over.
There are a few celebrity cameos, including Sheryl Crow and the one and only Oprah. It's an intriguing ride if you can keep up with the hectic daily schedules of Mayor Hickenlooper. We highly suggest you catch this film; especially if you're a Denverite — you will appreiciate all the work our mayor does for our city. He's quite a comedian too!
