Bale continued on the sci-fi/fantasy path with a psuedo-"Matrix" action movie set in a bleak totalitarian future. Despite a classy cast that also included Emily Watson (previously Bale's co-star in sex-heavy Brit indie "Metroland"), Taye Diggs and Sean Bean, the movie was dumped into theaters with little fanfare. But the elaborately choreographed fight scenes have made it a minor geek classic on DVD.
(Fun fact: according to moviebodycount.com, Bale's character is responsible for the third highest body count of any movie character ever with 118 of the movie's 236 deaths.)
