You loved the movie, what about the DVD?
Find out as we examine the extras on this week's best movie DVDs...
“THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT: UNRATED”
Stars: Monica Potter, Tony Goldwyn, Sara Paxton
Director: Dennis Iliadis (“Hardcore”)
Format: DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "For what it is, it's effective. But lost among the bloodlust is any sense of these characters as human beings."
Extras: DVD: Both the theatrical and an uncut version of the movie; “A Look Inside” featurette; deleted scenes.
Blu-ray: All of the above extras plus a digital copy and BD-Live functions that include scene sharing.
Worth watching: Why would anyone watch a cut version of a horror movie when they don’t have to?
Worth skipping: “A Look Inside” is more superficial than inside-y.
Worth adding: A commentary by Potter, Goldwyn, Paxton, head villain Garret Dillahunt and Iliadis, as well as Wes Craven, who directed the 1972 original and co-produced this remake.
Buy, rent or ignore: Rent.
“HANNAH MONTANA: THE MOVIE”
Stars: Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray Cyrus, Vanessa Williams
Director: Peter Chelsom (“Town & Country”)
Formats: Single-disc DVD, Two-disc DVD, DVD/Blu-ray Combo
What we said: "Nothing but an impersonal product manipulating kids who don't know better. All Hannah Montana does is steal their lunch money."
Extras: Single-disc DVD: None
Two-disc DVD: Deleted scenes with commentary by Chelsom; a music video; “Find Your Way Back Home” and “Production 101: Jackson Style” featurettes; bloopers; digital copy.
DVD/Blu-ray Combo: All of the two-disc DVD extras plus more music videos; “The Hoedown Throwdown Experience” featurette; The Hannah Montana Store interactive shopping option; Radio Disney access.
Worth watching: The music videos. If you like “Hannah Montana” and/or Miley, you probably like her music.
Worth skipping: The Hannah Montana Store lets you get information about, and then buy, things you see in the movie. It's commercialism run amok. And, sadly, the shape of things to come.
Worth adding: A commentary by a mental heath professional who deals in split personality disorder.
Buy, rent or ignore: Rent the two-disc DVD or DVD/Blu-ray combo; Ignore the single-disc.
“TYSON”
Stars: Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield, Don King
Director: James Toback (“When Will I Be Loved”)
Formats: DVD, Blu-ray
What we said: "An eye-popper, creating a fascinating portrait that's both savage and sympathetic."
Extras: Commentary by Toback; “A Day in the Life” featurette on Toback; “Iron Mike: Toback Talks Tyson” featurette.
Worth watching: The “Iron Mike” featurette is the least self-serving of all the extras. But not by much.
Worth skipping: The commentary is Toback overload.
Worth adding: The music video for “I Think I Can Beat Mike Tyson” by DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince.
Buy, rent or ignore: Rent.
