Hundreds of weens head to LoDo in hopes of making it the wiener’s circle
Short legs and longs bodies took over the streets of LoDo. No, they’re not disproportioned people…we’re talking about wiener dogs. The Long Dog Derby brought hundreds of miniature dachshunds to Oktoberfest Denver for the last day of the German celebration. Fluffy weens, slick weens and even dressed up weens came out to sniff each other’s behinds and race against one another in hopes of making it to the wiener’s circle.
The Long Dog Derby raises money for the Colorado Dachshund Rescue and even some adoptable weens were there looking for their new family!
The race was separated in a couple divisions: baby wiener dogs were in the little links category, 1-5 year olds were in the frankfurter division, older ones were placed in the senior sausages and wieners with disabilities were in the hot dog cart category. And those breeds that wished they were a cool dachshund, were in the wannabe wieners division!
After the races wrapped up, the annual costume contest took place. Metromix.com’s producer, Erica Boniface was one of the judges along with her trusty sidekick wiener dog Daisy, and Channel 7’s Anne Trujillo helped judge the very serious contest. Skunks, Broncos weens, a porcupine, a skydiving penguin and even a wiener dog dressed as Kim Kardashian came out strutting their little legs in front of the huge audience. A wiener sheriff came in third, the kayaking wiener dog was second and the Chia pet ween took home the gold.
Flip through the photos from the hilarious event and if you’re jonesin’ for a wiener of your own, adopt one from the Colorado Dachshund Rescue!
And if you love to dress your pets up, get them ready for the 2010 Pet Parade at Elitch Gardens!
