Thousands brave the elements at Denver's Colfax Marathon
It was a balmy 36 degrees and the rain was coming down as runners hit the pavement to brave the elements during the Colfax Marathon on Sunday. More than 8,500 people were up bright and early at 6 a.m. as they took on the marathon, half marathon, and relay races (we’re guessing these guys weren’t up drinking with Metromix at the Polo Classic Barn Party Saturday night).
Once the runners crossed the finish line, the mittens came out and the ski caps went on. They were also given snazzy thermal silver parkas when they completed the long trek. For a while, it looked like a bunch of “Balloon Boy” clones had taken over City Park.
No surprise that the beer garden and coffee stand were almost as popular as our Metromix chapstick. Runners and their fans were treated to barbeque and several brewskies (proof it’s never too early for either especially when you’ve been up since 4 a.m.).
The Lila Bloom Band kept the music flowing throughout the park despite the chilly temps.
In the end, Nicholas Mockeridge won the marathon for the guys doing 26.2 miles in 2:34:27 and Nicole Chyr won it for the ladies clocking in at 2:59:1 (we’re guessing neither one of them stopped for potty breaks).
A big congrats from Metromix to all the runners on Sunday (we’re exhausted just watching you and we’re still recovering from our Saturday night shenanigans). We also want to give special recognition to all the awesome friends and family who came out to support these guys despite the early hours and icky weather. You dudes and dudettes so earned a brunch from everyone who decided to stay home. If they don’t pay up, let us know and we’ll sniff them out for you!!—Laura Kelley, Special to Metromix
