Free Tours

For the tightwad on a budget

March 27, 2008

Whenever the word free is involved in anything, people get excited. Even if it's a FREE tour of the boring State Capitol. Doh, wait, we're talking about that tour. Fine, it isn't that boring. So if you're looking to plan a fun day out with the family or you have a relative that is just frickin' hard to please, strap them in your car and take them to these places. And hey, you may even learn something along the way.
The United States Mint at Denver

The United States Mint at Denver

320 W. Colfax Ave. , Denver
303-279-8181

The Colorado Mint can be your next stop for a family vacation. Nothing is more exciting then seeing where money is made. Maybe take your shopaholic family members here to see how much goes into the money-making process. It is funny that The Mint is a FREE tour. You even earn a penny when you go here...one that hasn't been stamped yet.

Hammond's Candies

Hammond's Candies

5735 N. Washington St., Denver
303-333-5588

Now this is a tour. Nothing is sweeter (pun intended) than a tour that involves candy. For real. And it is FREE. Whether you're a candy cane person or a lollipoop kind of guy, they have all that and everything else our personal trainers binge on when we aren't looking.

Coors Brewery

Coors Brewery

13th & Ford Streets, Golden
303-277-BEER

You can practically remember the Coors commercial with their new bottle that turns blue when it gets cold. The guy opens the fridge and the girl is in the bathroom waiting for her pregnancy test results and together they chime, "Yes, it turned blue!" Ahhh, good old Coors. We should be proud to be in the same state where Coors is brewed. People may refer to it as "piss beer" or "alcoholic water" but it still gets the job done, it gets you drunk without the wicked hangover the next day. We have Coors Field, Coors Amphitheatre and the Coors Event Center...we are Coors-ed to the max. If you haven't done the Coors Tour, you need to schedule it between your sporting events and work before you bite the big one.

Colorado State Capitol

Colorado State Capitol

200 E. Colfax Ave., Denver
303-866-2604

This may be the home of Colorado's State Senate and House of Representatives, but it can also be populated by tourists looking to peer into some Colorado History. Sounds like a fun family vacation. Just when you thought going to the Grand Canyon was a blast, your family detours to the Capitol. You get to learn about the gold dome, the law-making process and all the joys of the building's construction. Who needs Disneyland when you have the Colorado State Capitol right in your back yard?!

Celestial Seasonings Tour & Tea Shop

Celestial Seasonings Tour & Tea Shop

4600 Sleepytime Dr., Boulder
303-581-1202

What started out as two guys picking herbs around Boulder and Aspen, packaging them in muslin bags and selling them to natural food stores has turned into an international business doing over 1.4 million cups of tea a year. This Boulder landmark offers one of the only remaining working factory tours in the country. Stop by for a free tour and see your chamomile and sleepytime favorites being milled and packaged. You can choose to sample Celestial’s new coffee selections or over 100 teas, or grab a bite in the Celestial Café. There are tables inside and out on a patio to kick back and sip some of the good stuff.
