Dragon Boat Festival on Sloan's Lake
Metromix went to one of the most authentic festivals around, the 2008 Dragon Boat Festival; which is considered the Olympics of dragon boat racing. Taiwanese-style boats were gliding through the waters of Sloan's Lake as they carried national and community teams as they competed in a 500-meter course. The races were impressive enough, but we gotta tell you, many spectators weren't there to just stand on the shore to watch. The lake was swarmed with booths that were filled with gobs of Asian cuisine, shopping, and of course, the gigantor beer garden. After a couple beers in the the garden, it was fun to walk around and browse all that was offered. After a couple beers it was also easier to withstand the horrid port-a-potties. If you have never experienced the Dragon Boat Festival—why the heck not? It is boat loads of fun (no pun intended).
