Happy birthday Bob Marley

"In this bright future, you can't forget your past," were once the words of the famous singer.

Far from Jamaica, the Rasta legend’s presence still lingers in Denver 64 years later.

On Feb. 6, 1945 Robert "Bob" Nesta Marley was born in Nine Mile in Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, going on to become one of the most well known purveyors of reggae music in history.

A sign of his timeless beliefs and influence, several Denver and Boulder establishments threw Mr. Marley birthday parties all this weekend.

On Feb. 6th, Quixote's True Blue Café was one of the many local establishments making sure we didn't forget our past. DJ BloodPreshah got the night started with an appropriate mix of Mr. Marley's' best work, while Reggae artist Yam Bolo and his crew the Yameuphomy Band honored the date with their soulful dub. Hailing from Kingston, Bolo's crew is comprised of some of the most respected reggae-recording artists including Ozou'ne Sundalyah, Howard Brown, Danny Thompson and Wilbert Ellis.

“He changed music,” said Adolfo Angulo, who attended Quixote’s. “He changed the way we look at music; he changed the way we listen to music.  But more importantly, he changed the way we live. The Rasta movement might be his greatest legacy even outside The Wailers. It’s great to see such great celebrations here in town.”

Marley died May 11, 1981, at the age of 36.
