Sound art at Meadowlark
Different mediums team up for art show opening
Music and art go together like cans of PBR and cheap bar tabs. All four were in abundance Thursday, June 5 at Meadowlark for a showcase featuring new works by Denver artist Audrey McNamara. Her vivid, comic-inspired narratives of "sluts and drug addicts" adhering to the "live fast, die young" mentality were described by McNamara as "motel fetish." The musical accompaniment was kicked off in high gear by The Messengers, a local three piece playing some heavy instrumental indie rock. Next up was Khale, playing their brand of spacey, electronic pop. Edward Almost followed with his bizarre, folky, mournful tunes about redemption, grave robbing and a bear named Velox, to name a couple themes. The setlist also included a tripped out ode to Dock Ellis, one of only 250 or so major leaguers to ever pitch a no-hitter and certainly the only one to do so while high on LSD. Despite getting into a car accident earlier in the night, Sofo brought the night to a close, playing a rare acoustic set from their emotionally charged new album.
