Our take: "Eccentricities of a Blond Hair Girl"
Not as eccentric as we had hoped
Special to Metromix
More remarkable than this film is the fact that the director, Manoel de Oliveira, is 100 years old. Oliveira has taken a classic short story and turned it into to a poetic feature on screen.
A bookkeeper becomes enthralled by a woman outside his office window. For several days, he spies on her, falling more and more in love with her mysterious ways. A Chinese fan becomes a character in itself as she flirtatiously waves it around her face as they stare at each other across the way. When he finally proposes to her, their courtship gets tangled in financial and family struggles. The ending of “Eccentricities of a Blond Hair Girl” throws us for a loop when a hefty twist is put on the blond girl's character.
Eccentric? The woman is intriguing but not exactly eccentric. Perhaps it’s the translation throwing us off a bit. The subtitles are in English; however the film is done entirely in the seductive language of Portuguese. Slightly slow-moving for only being 64 minutes long, this film is a go if you’re into foreign romance. If that’s not your movie style, then you probably won’t be too upset if you miss it.
