Best Brewerys
A Deep Thought by Jack Handey:

“Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then I look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes & dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, 'It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than to be selfish and worry about my liver.'”

We agree, Jack.

Avery Brewing Co.

Avery Brewing Co.

5763 Arapahoe Ave. Unit E, Boulder

If Colorado is known for one thing... it's probably the mountains. If we're known for two things...well skiing is pretty high on the list too, huh. Well, beer's definitely up there somewhere, right? Especially in the Denver Metro area, where skiing is more than a short walk to the slopes and the mountains are on the horizon, a plethora of micro brewed choices are close at hand and calling your name. They're around every corner, down dark alleys, and tucked away in some Boulder warehouse. Yes, beer is close at hand! Delicious, hand crafted barrels of God's own goodness rained from the heavens and into Avery's east Boulder warehouse for your drinking pleasure. Who needs to climb a freakin' mountain when you can have a Fourteener in a bottle?

There would be no better way to spend one or two (hundred) of them than by sipping the libations produced at Left Hand Brewing Company at their brewery in Longmont. Relax with the locals after work in their tasting room or on the patio and knock back a couple Haystack Wheats or Deep Cover Brown Ales. Denver Chophouse & Brewery

Denver Chophouse & Brewery

1735 19th St., Denver
303-296-0800

We’ve always said it would be cool to have a time machine. Now you can…sort of. Step out of 2008 and into the 1940’s at this elegant restaurant. Lined with wood floors and classy tables, you will feel like you’ve stepped into the days of “Bing Crosby.” Staying with that era, they also play music from the 30s and 40s while you dine. The food is top-notch as well. On the menu you’ll find plank salmon, filet mignon, crab cakes and many other delicious options. Bloody Mary people we’re talking to you: The 'Mary’s' are perfectly spicy and the ingredients are just right.

Walnut Brewery

Walnut Brewery

1123 Walnut St., Boulder
303-447-1345

We love beer. Beer beer beer. If you dig beer like we do and seek originality this is the place for you. Being Boulder’s original brewery, they have had enough time to tweak their recipes and make some of the best beer you’ve ever had. It’s a laid back environment to have a brewsky in and it has that typical brewpub feel to it—nothing uber fancy just good people, beer and food. Burgers, pastas, sandwiches and salads are on their menu along with nachos, ball park pretzels and much more. Mmmmm beer, is there anything it can’t do?

Wynkoop Brewery

Wynkoop Brewery

1634 18th St., Denver
303-297-2700

Beer beer beer beer beer beer beer. The “Koop” often turns your dinner outing into a crazy long night. Ironically enough, Edward Wynkoop, was Denver’s first ever Sherriff when he arrived to Denver in 1858 (back when it was still Kansas Territory). Today, the historic brewpub brings you some of the best beer around. When you first walk in, you have a few options—turn right you end up in the bar, turn left you’re in the dining area, go upstairs and you end up in the “Koop” with pool, a shuffle table and tasty libations, or go downstairs to “Impulse Theatre” for some excellent comedy shows. The interior wood-lined floors and pillars really bring out the history in the building. Beer buff? Try “Patty’s Chile Beer,” you can actually smell and taste the jalapenos as you sip away. Also ‘word on the street’ says the fish n’ chips are some of the best in the town. Wow, Denver’s first Sherriff really kicked butt.

Golden City Brewery

Golden City Brewery

920 12th St., Golden
303-279-8092

The Golden City Brewery touts itself as "the second biggest brewery in Golden," and a tour through their facility reveals an operation that is both professional and intimate. With brews such as the medium Golden City Red Ale, the dark amber Hazy and the rich Oatmeal Stout, this brewery has plenty of unique blends to compete with the larger Colorado company. In addition to a small dining hall and light menu for the public, the brewery is open for tours Monday to Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and the knowledgeable staff provides plenty of free samples. Even while its internationally famous beer neighbor casts a formidable shadow, no silver bullet can take away from this gem of a brew house.

Rockyard American Grill & Brewing Company

Rockyard American Grill & Brewing Company

880 Castleton Rd., Castle Rock
303- 814-9273

Best known for its own brewpub brews with beers like Double Eagle Ale, Redhawk Ale, Lightning Strike, and Lynx Light Lager, as well as for its seasonal brews, the Rockyard is part brewpub, part sports bar, and part community gathering place, with full lunch and dinner menus to boot. Try the signature Rockyard Knots, enormous pretzels stuffed with jalapeño cheese and served with spicy Redhawk Ale mustard. Otherwise, anything that goes on a grill goes well here: steaks, seafood, burgers, fajitas... The daily specials dictate differences in the crowd on given nights: Monday is "Margarita Night", with $2.25 house margaritas and all-you-can-eat fajitas for $17.95. Tuesday features house brews for $2.50 with kids eating free, Wednesday is steak night, Thursday is "Ladies Night", and house brews are $3 anytime the Broncos or Avs are on TV. Ummm....where is the Rockies love??

Great Divide Brewing Company

Great Divide Brewing Company

2201 Arapahoe St., Denver
303-296-9460

Great Divide. Doesn't hearing those two words just get your mouth watering? If your regular vocabulary consists of words like hops, malt and barley, then you know exactly what hearing those two words does to you. Located in the shadow of Coors Field, Great Divide is a shining example of what Colorado "Brew Masters" have to offer. Great Divide is open to the public six days a week and offers 12 of the brewery’s current beers. Tours of the Great Divide brewery includes a tasting of a selection of the company’s finest ales. The best part about GDB isn't the fact that they're located amidst the hustle and bustle of downtown, it's not the fact that it's one of the better places to sample local culture, it's not even the fact that they are named after our lovely Rocky Mountains; it's the fact that they have been awarded not one, not two, not even 10, but 12 Great American Beer Festival medals, four World Beer Cup awards and are ranked the 23rd best brewery on the planet. Now that’s what beer is all about.

Boulder Beer

Boulder Beer

2880 Wilderness Pl., Boulder
303-444-8448

You may be wondering why Boulder has a brewery. After all, there's a University there - shouldn't those kids be studying? And do the hippies really make enough money begging on Pearl Street to afford a microbrew? And let's not forget the upper-class yuppies - surely they're drinking fancy wines or trendy martinis. They'd rather be caught dumping their recycling into the trash than sipping a brew. So, who is their market then? Apparently everyone else - both inside and outside of Boulder. Since they opened in 1979 they've gained a massive following, and their restaurant's not bad either.
