Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901), 23rd President of the USA
The Man: Benny’s presidency is remembered less for its legislative successes than for a handful of non-governmental oddities that occurred during his single term in the big chair. For one, he was the first president to have his voice recorded. And for another, he had the White House wired for electricity, certainly a mixed blessing as he was mortally afraid of being electrocuted and so never touched light switches. He was a fan of bourbon (America’s Whiskey), but created a public scandal when he switched to Dewer’s scotch (foreign booze!) after being given a cask by Andrew Carnegie.
The Vice: Dewer’s is, of course, among the better blended scotch whiskies on the planet. Single-malt purists give it short shrift, but it’s affordably priced and, with the inclusion of an ice cube or two, provides the foundation for several relaxing hours of contemplative sipping. Pick up a bottle at most liquor stores, or you’re likely to find it at those bars that haven’t switched their entire stock to flavored rums and vodkas. The bar in the Brown Palace is a good place to start.
