Ever wonder where the whole "shaken, not stirred" thing originated? Wonder no more. Here's the original passage from the first James Bond book, 1953's "Casino Royale:"
"A dry martini," he said. "One. In a deep champagne goblet."
"Oui, monsieur."
"Just a moment. Three measures of Gordon's, one of vodka, half a measure of Kina Lillet. Shake it very well until it's ice-cold, then add a large thin slice of lemon-peel. Got it?"
Only years later did the makers of the Bond films play up the "shaken not stirred" angle to make Bond sound more sophisticated. Who says Metromix isn't educational?
