And the winner is…
The Rio Grande Mexican Restaurant
1525 Blake St.
Denver, CO 80202Neighborhood: Lodo
We aren't in love with Rio Grande's food, but you can't go wrong with the hip crowd and wonderfully tasty, stiff margaritas. A friendly warning: Obey the three margs per person limit or you'll be sorry.
Nominees
Benny's Restaurante Y Tequila Bar
301 E. 7th Ave.
Denver, CO 80203Neighborhood: Capitol Hill
Widely regarded as having among the best food, green chili, rellenos, and, lest we forget, margaritas in town. The atmosphere at Benny's is comfortable yet lively. Get the sloppy burrito and a pear margarita and you’ll never want to leave.
Tamayo
1400 Larimer St.
Denver, CO 80202Neighborhood: Central Business District
Fancy cocktails are one of Tamayo's specialties (try the mango mojito), so it's no surprise that they turn out some of the area's best margaritas. The restaurant is bigger than it looks on the outside, with an amazing terrace, multiple dining rooms, comfortable tables and booths and, best of all, an eye-catching bar with a fabulous tile collage as a focal point.
Lime
1414 Larimer St.
Denver, CO 80202Neighborhood: Central Business District
The ubiquitous Lime doubles down by making alcohol just as ubiquitous within their restaurants. What Lime may give up in high-falutin' presentation it makes up for in fun and value.
Mezcal
3230 E. Colfax Ave.
Denver, CO 80206The ultra-trendy décor, augmented by lots of quasi-Mexican knickknacks, attracts hipsters like a bug zapper attracts moths. The fare is a collection of that stuff that is a half-step off from traditional (mango margaritas, goat cheese quesadillas, cilantro black beans, etc.), and the bartenders pour heavy and know many obscure mixes.
